Course contents

The course focuses on elucidating central didactical issues in physical education. The course will deal with physical education in the light of the current curriculum and will discuss planning, implementation and assessment of teaching in the subject. Analyses and reflections will deal with the pupils¿ learning outcomes from physical education seen in the light of the learning environment, the learning strategies and meaningful assessment.

  • Didactics in physical education

  • Observation of own and others¿ taught lessons in physical education

  • The use of questionnaires for measuring the learning outcomes and the state of the learning environment

  • Interviews with physical education teachers and ¿ pupils

  • Creative experimentation with various activities and learning strategies

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

Knowledge:

  • Be able to analyze physical education in the light the current curriculum, and reflect upon preparation and implementation of teaching in physical education in the light of:

    • Learning outcomes

    • Learning environment

    • Learning strategies

    • Meaningful assessment

  • Be able to analyze and reflect upon the role as a teacher in physical education in the light of relevant literature

Skills:

  • Be able to demonstrate skills in short and long term planning in order to achieve good quality of the physical education lessons, and be able to reflect upon different learning methods

  • Be able to evaluate own and others¿ taught lessons in physical education

  • Be able to demonstrate skills in teaching and be able to use various teaching strategies in order to achieve good quality in physical education lessons

  • Be able to exemplify how a good learning environment can be developed and how the pupils¿ beliefs in own coping can be promoted in the physical education lessons

  • Be able to explain how the pupils¿ inner motivation for lifelong learning can be promoted through physical education

General competence:

  • Be able to contribute to developing research-based professional knowledge as a physical education teacher especially, as well as in general school development

  • Be able to systematically and critically assess didactical issues in physical education in the light of research literature

  • Be able to systematically and critically assess own and others¿ teaching practice in physical education

  • Be able to contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in physical education

Examination requirements

A minimum of 80 % attendance rate in compulsory instruction is required.

Passed practical studies or didactical assignment.

Teaching methods

Lectures, discussions, group work, seminar presentations and practical testing of activities. Compulsory attendance at all instruction.

Estimated work load is 405 hours. 15 days of practical studies are included for the Teacher Education students (GLU). Other students will do a didactical piece of work of an equivalent volume, which must be passed.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual portfolio. The portfolio comprises three assignments and the student may have three tutorials related to the assignment. The assignment must not exceed 8000 words.

Collected material from observation and interviews are to be considered as attachments to the assignment. The assignment will be graded. All examination support material is allowed.
