Prerequisites

Physical education and Sports, 1-year programme (60 credits) and / or IDR116 (10 credit), or equivalent

Course contents

The following is emphasized: Knowledge about and skills connected to physical activity as a means to counteract a sedentary lifestyle and maintain and promote an active lifestyle. Knowledge about psychosocial factors are also emphasized. Students will gain experience in mapping / testing of physical activity levels and habits and health related physical shape as well as an introduction to the use tools to promote supervisory competence. The course will mainly focus on everyday activity and low-threshold activity as well as increased knowledge on the importance of an active, health promoting, and health preserving lifestyle.

The main points of the course content are:

  • Guidelines (for instance The Norwegian Directorate of Health), legislation (for instance The Interaction Reform), and quality systems (for instance ICF; International Classification of Function)

  • Physical activity level and physical shape statuses in the population

  • The correlation between physical activity, physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, physical shape, and health

  • Physical activity as a "health factor" and sedentary behavior as a "risk factor"

  • Framework conditions (such as physical / environmental, mental, and social)

  • Barriers and motives for physical activity

  • Implementable tests / tools for measuring physical activity levels (such as accelerometes, questionnaires, observatio), and health related physical shape (primaray field based tests)

  • Tools to promote supervisory competence

  • Examples of adaption of physical activity for various groups in all phases of life (children/adolescents, adults, elderly) in different arenas (such as for instance school, workplace, gym, "frisklivssentral", transportation, nature)

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

On succesful completion of the course, students will:

  • demonstrate research based knowledge on the correlation between physical activity, physical inactivity, a sedentary lifestyle, physical shape, and health

  • demonstrate knowledge on how to plan for physical activity for various groups and under various framework conditions

  • demonstrate knowledge on different barriers for physical activity and how to motivate for physical activity and change of lifestyle in various groups

 

Skills:

On succesful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • plan for, carry out, and evaluate testing of physical activity levels and health related physical shape and communicate results on an individual level

  • perform mapping of individual and societal framework conditions, and plan for, carry out and evaluate physical activity for various groups

 

General competence:

On succesful completion of the course, students will:

  • demonstrate experience related to different test methods for measuring physical activity levels and health related physical shape and be able to assess activity measures which may be health promoting in various groups

  • demonstrate insight into communication / supervision related to physical activity among people who wish to or ought to achieve an increased physical activity level

  • demonstrate an understanding of the importance and necessity of keeping up-to-date with relevant research knowledge in the theme

Teaching methods

Lectures, dialogic teaching, laboratory teaching, practical teaching in the field, and group work. Interaction between theory and practical work will be emphasized.

All theoretical and practical laboratory teaching is compulsory. The student workload is estimated to approx. 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A 3-hour written individual examination. Letter grades A-F will be given. This is further described in the semester plan on Canvas.
