Course contents

French literature from the 17th till the 19th century. Literary theory and history. Text analysis. French society and the French-speaking world today seen in the light of French history.

A compulsory 5-week study period in Caen in January/February is included in the course, comprising an introduction to French geography and social studies. During their stay, students interview at least two persons in French, and write a paper in the language based on these interviews. A written assignment and an oral presentation are given at the end of the period. Students who have been granted exemption from going abroad will also write a paper and give an oral presentation at the University of Agder. Instructions will be given by the teacher. Please note that registration for the stay abroad takes place during autumn semester. 

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired knowledge about French literature from several periods and genres. They will have the ability to analyse and place texts in a historical and social context. Students will also have acquired knowledge of French history in order to enhance their understanding of France and the French-speaking world today. The course aims to further improve students' ability to understand and express themselves in French in both oral and written form.  

Examination requirements

  • an oral presentation of the project work in Caen or at the University of Agder must be assessed as a Pass (applies to all students)

  • a written assignment in culture must be assessed as a Pass (applies to all students)

  • a written assignment in literature must be assessed as a Pass. This last condition does not apply for students on integrated teacher training programme with master´s degree. For them condition 3) is passed practice

Assessment methods and criteria

5-hour written examination in literature which counts 50% towards the final grade.
4-hour written examination in history and culture which also counts 50% towards the final grade.
You are allowed to use the dictionary
Le Petit Robert I or Le Micro-Robert on the exams. Graded assessment.
