The concept of Smartgrid, with network, components, technologies and trends

Significance to participants throughout the value chain, opportunities, threats, business models and regulatory issues.

Future operations centers (load dispatching centers) with multi-way communication, measurements, controls, fault detections with protections and optimal utilization of resources.

Integration of distributed variable generation, planning, management, operation, voltage stability and protection

Advanced metering systems and intelligent buildings with demand side management and energy efficiency
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to

explain the smartgrid's structure and function

actively contribute to the discussion and selection of solutions for further development of the current grid,

understand the value chain and contribute to the interaction between participants and optimum utilization of Energy companies' - and customers' ¿ resources

understand the impact of intermittent renewable energy sources and energy storage with demand side management and energy efficiency on power system networks.
Examination requirements
Participation in a minimum of 60% of the seminars.
Teaching methods
A number of one-day seminars, independent study, project work in groups of one to three students. The project work results in the handin of a 10 ¿ 15 page report, in the form of a scientific /technical report or research paper, including a relevant and interesting problem area related to the objectives of course, with discussion and conclusion and recommendations. An abstract is mandatory.
Estimated work load for the average student is approximately 200 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the master’s programme in Renewable energy.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment of written report. Graded assessment.
Other information
The students should have PC, MAC, tablet or similar portable equipment available for use in the learning situation. From the academic year 2014 - 2015, such equipment is being considered to be mandatory.
