This course focuses on the phonology of English, taking a closer look at the key theoretical issues as well as the experiments designed and conducted to test these theories. In the first part of the course, we will read and discuss general phonological theory and the implications they have for English. In the second part, we will read and discuss experimental literature that supports or refutes these theories. The degree of diachronic or synchronic focus of this course can be adjusted to fit individual interests.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course, students have acquired an understanding of
- phonological theory especially pertaining to English phonology
- how different theoretical frameworks account for the mental representation of phonology
- experimental methods used to test phonological theories
On successful completion of the course, students are able to
- read linguistic articles and discuss aspects and topics dealt with within phonology
- write a paper dealing with linguistic topics and experimental literature
Examination requirements
To be eligible to take the exam, the midterm assigment must have been approved.
Teaching methods
Lectures, discussions, individual work and in groups, including the term paper. Active and regular participation is expected. The estimated workload is approximately 270 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Individual term paper (5000-6000 words). Graded assessment.
