Course contents
This course provides knowledge and information of developments of American and British politics from 1975 until today. The content is twofold: the first period is 1975-2001 and the second period covers the years from 2001 until today. The students will be given an introduction to political, social and historical terms and phrases tied to the two countries’ political development. Moreover, the course focuses on how the provided knowledge and information can be applied to teaching and learning in a school setting.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students have
- specialised knowledge about political processes and systems in the UK and USA
- detailed knowledge of the development of contemporary American and British politics
- thorough knowledge of American and British political research and communication
- insight into how American and British Politics is taught in Norwegian schools
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to
- describe and explain significant principles of the study of American and British politics
- analyse and critically evaluate literature and other texts related to the course
- employ the knowledge of the topics didactically and in a reflected way, corresponding to the relevant school curricula
- describe and explain relevant features of development in American and British politics and society
Upon successful completion of the course, students can
- use the acquired knowledge in teaching and/or communication of American and British politics and society
- Reflect on relevant issues in American and British politics
- Employ the acquired knowledge in further studies of politics and society
Examination requirements
An oral presentation for teacher-training students and a written assignment for English discipline students must be assessed as a pass.
Teaching methods
Seminars, presentations, group and pair work. Active and regular participation is expected. The estimated workload is approximately 270 hours.
Evaluation
The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria
A six-hour written exam at the end of term. Graded assessment.
