Course contents

The course will focus on the basic principles of highway design, road geometry and alignment, cross-section design, traffic safety, universal design, climatic and environmental factors, aesthetics and adaptation to surroundings. It gives general introduction to the highway design according to the Norwegian standard (Håndbok N100).

Learning outcomes

After taking this course, the student should have knowledge of

  • Basic principles of highway planning and design, investigation of road traffic measures with emphasis on accessibility, traffic safety, environment and costs

  • Design of roads and associated facilities with a view to route selection, geometric design in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, environment and aesthetic design

Examination requirements

• Exercises must be approved in order to take the exam.

Teaching methods

• Lecture and exercises. Guest lectures, excursions and project work in groups.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Assessment methods and criteria

Written, individual examination, 3 hours, counts 60% of total grade. Project assignment counts 40% of total grade. Individual grade requirements for project work are given at the start of the semester.
