Course contents
Static equilibrium. Statically determined structures: beams, frames and trusses. Internal forces: axial force, shear force and bending moment diagrams. Introduction to strength of materials: mechanical stresses, strains and elasticity. Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, bending stresses and beam equation. Euler’s buckling.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall:
-
Obtain theoretical basis needed for design of building structures with regard to the loadbearing capacity
-
Know the difference between statically determined and statically indeterminate structure
-
Be able to use equilibrium equations to calculate the reaction forces in statically determined structures: beams, 2D-trusses and frames
-
Understand the difference in behavior of bar/rod elements and beam elements.
-
Be able to construct internal force diagrams i.e. bending moment diagram, shear force diagram and axial force diagram
-
Know how to calculate the centroid and other relevant parameters of beam cross-section
-
Be able to calculate the normal stresses and strains caused by combined action of axial force and bending moment
-
Be familiar with the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation and be able to use it to calculate deflections
-
Obtain knowledge about Euler buckling
Examination requirements
Students must pass the compulsory assignments in order to take the examination.
