Higher Education Entrance Qualification

Recommended prerequisites

Language skills equivalent to level 2 in upper secondary school (general studies branch)/ B1 Common European Framework for Languages are recommended. A language course or a stay in a Spanish speaking country is also recommended. It will be very demanding to follow the course without any previous knowledge.

Course contents

The course gives an introduction to modern literature in the Spanish language. Students will work with a selection of texts from different genres. The main emphasis will be on the 20th century. The study will give an insight into central themes and problems in Spanish literature and culture. Emphasis will be on the students’ development of an analytical understanding of the characteristics of the texts, as well as historical and cultural contexts. The students will also develop their ability to relate independently to academic matters.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:

Upon completion of the course students shall have knowledge about

  • modern literature in Spanish

  • basic text analysis

  • the historical and cultural contexts in which the literature exists

Skills:

Upon completion of the course students shall be able to

  • analyse texts and other cultural expressions in a reflected manner

  • view texts in their historical and literary context

  • analyse texts

  • apply basic literary terminology in Spanish

General competency:

Upon completion of the course students shall be able to:

  • gather information about relevant subject material in Spanish

  • analyse subject material in an independent and critical way

  • present topics within the course both orally and in writing in a structured way

  • master different academic genres in Spanish, orally and in writing

Examination requirements

The following must be completed and passed:

Mandatory attendance requirement: 70%

Students in the teacher education: Practice period and assignment

All other students: Project work and assignment

Lectures, group work and seminars.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio exam. Students select two mandatory assignments, which they improve and hand in for assessment. Both assignments should be about 2000 words. Students will be graded both on content and language proficiency. Graded assessment.
