Course contents

The course gives an introduction to the interaction between religion, human beings and society, and discusses the importance of faith and world views for the individual and on central arenas like education, health and culture. The course gives perspectives on the connection between the individual, organization/group and wider society. It also provides an introduction to central theories and methods of social science.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • have a broad knowledge of social scientific perspectives on the interaction between religion, human beings and society

  • have knowledge about theories of faith and identity making, secularization, individualization, pluralizing of religion and worldviews, and the significance of faith and world views on public arenas

  • have knowledge about social scientific concepts and methods

Skills

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • be able to reflect upon how religion and world views influence individuals and society

  • be able to reflect upon the position that religion and world views have and should have on various social arenas

General competence

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • be able to apply social scientific knowledge to problems related to the interaction between religion, human beings and society

Examination requirements

For discipline students: Preliminary examination must be passed. Further information when the semester starts.
For students on integrated teacher programmes with master's degree: Professional practice must be passed.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars. Practice for students in the teacher education.
The workload is estimated to ca. 270 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
