Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or equivalent, including introductory courses in Organization Theory and Strategy or Business Strategyor equivalent.

Course contents

The course provides a comprehensive overview of the most important theories, concepts and tools in strategic management. The purpose of this course is to define and analyze the major strategic issues and functions managers must understand to operate effectively in international markets. The objective of the course is to create an understanding of how to strategize and compete around the globe. The course focuses on the important question "why are some firms more successful than other firms?" A special attention is paid to the institutional framework that surrounds strategic managers and to questions of socially responsible management.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course students should have a good understanding of

  • the definition of strategic management and its key attributes

  • The theoretical foundation of strategic management

  • the process of strategy development within the context of complex and dynamic environments

  • the social responsibility of strategic managers and the role of ethical questions in strategic management

Students should be able to

  • identify how firms create value

  • demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical basis for the analytical frameworks used in strategy

  • recognize the challenges managers face when competing internationally

  • draw on theory to analyze cases and problems communicate the theories, frameworks, and models to specialists and the general public

  • apply the core concepts and tools of strategic planning

  • analyze corporate and competitive strategies and develop new strategies

Examination requirements

Approved group assignments. More information will be given on Canvas at the start of the semester.

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work and case discussions. Estimated workload is about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

4 hour written examination. Letter grades. More information in Canvas.

Due to grade requirements for state authorised public accountants, a regular examination will be held both autumn and spring.
