Course contents

  • Ensemble (5 credits)

  • Main instrument (20 credits)

The course includes:

  • Improvisation

  • Development of instrumental/vocal skills

  • Development of style understanding and repertoire

  • Development of a personal expression

  • Knowledge of relevant methodology and development of own working practices

  • The harmonic, melodic and rhythmic foundation for different types of improvisational music

  • Transcribe

  • Accompaniment and arranging for the instrument

  • Rehearse, reproducing recorded music and aural playing

  • Recording practices, technological and arrangement aspects of recording associated with the instrument

  • Interaction and communication in various formats

  • Interpretation and concerts

Learning outcomes

The student will:

  • be familiar with different styles in various music traditions

  • have acquired good improvisational skills

  • be able to apply various methods for effective and targeted rehearsal of music

  • have a broad and reflective basis to recognize and understand the various forms of musical work in relation to their main instrument

  • be able to apply style knowledge related to its main instrument in an ensemble situation within the popular music tradition

Examination requirements

  • Approved participation of at least 3 concerts / artistic projects during the academic year.

  • A proficiency test on the main instrument lasting 15-20 minutes.

Teaching methods

The teaching will include individual lessons and group instruction. During the academic year, students participate in various mandatory projects and seminars. Each student is given individual instruction on their instrument. The main instrument instruction may periodically be organized flexibly to allow for different projects. Attendance is obligatory. Expected scope of work for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

Performing Music – Popular Music:

A concert carried out as a group exam consisting of a minimum of 2 students. The duration of the concert is set to 30 to a maximum of 45 minutes. Students are assessed individually. Repertoire and participation are decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

Electronic Music:

The exam consists of 2 parts:

  • Part 1: A performance of 25-30 minutes in the form of a concert, presentation or DJ set. The performance can be performed in groups, but is assessed individually. Repertoire and choice of performance form is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

  • Part 2: Individual portfolio submission with 15-20 minutes of recorded music. The recorded music can consist of several productions. Repertoire is decided in consultation with the main instrument teacher.

Both parts must be passed to pass the exam.
