Recommended prerequisites

ENE235 Electromagnetism and ENE236 Electric machines or similar.

Course contents

Transmission lines, models of the distribution system, three-phase systems, per unit systems, modelling of power system elements, power flow, fault analysis, introduction to the integration of renewable energy sources, introduction to the impact of electric vehicles on the power system.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students should

  • be able to describe large electrical power systems and their main components

  • understand three-phase systems, power flow as well as active and reactive power

  • have and understanding of power flow/load flow problems and be able to find solutions for such

  • be able to analyse faults in a power system

  • understand how integration of variable power sources and increased use of electric vehicles impact the power grid

Examination requirements

Mandatory exercises must be handed in and approved. The number of mandatory exercises will be given in Canvas at the start of the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercises.
Digital tools will be used for calculations and simulations.
The workload is estimated to be 27 hours per credit for the average student.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Admission Requirement if given as Single Standing Module

Higher Education Entrance Qualification including mathematics R1 and R2 and physics 1, or a pass in the preliminary course examination for engineers (which is also offered at University of Agder).

Assessment methods and criteria

4 hours individual written exam. Grading by letters.
