The course is connected to the following study programs

Teaching language

Norwegian / English.

Recommended prerequisites

BYG125 Building Materials, BYG308 Structural Design I – Concrete, BYG309 Structural Design II – Steel, BYG310 Structural Design III – Timber or equivalent courses

Course contents

High-performance materials are exemplified by the use of traditional concrete and the transition to UHPC as a case study. Opportunities that lie in the use of materials with special properties, e.g. through smart design, is explored through a R&D project.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student is expected to:

  • Be able to discuss how high-performance materials, as concrete, steel and aluminum, can help to solve challenges better than traditional construction materials.

  • Be able to discuss the characteristics and environmental consequences og high-performance variants of constructive materials, with focus on concrete.

  • Be able to analyze the implications of structural “service life”, using high-performance materials

Teaching methods

Lectures, laboratory exercises and project work.
Estimated workload for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Offered as Single Standing Module

Yes.

Admission Requirement if given as Single Standing Module

Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the master’s programme in Civil and Structural Engineering.

Assessment methods and criteria

Group project, 40 % of final grade
Individual 3 hour written exam, 60 % of final grade
Graded marks

Reduction of Credits
