Course contents

In this course, the students will participate in practical environmental therapeutic work. The students will follow experienced environmental therapists in their business and learn how to use environmental factors in a systematic way to promote change work. The course shows how the environmental therapist can apply knowledge from various academic points of view and help the child and their family with their everyday life. Training in communication is a central part of this course, along with the use of activities to promote coping experiences. The students will work with insight into and reflection on their own / service / institution's academic position.

Learning outcomes

After course completion the student should:

Knowledge:

  • have broad knowledge of the environmental therapist's working methods and academic and value base in different contexts

  • have basic knowledge about the importance of activities for coping and social participation

  • have broad knowledge of relationship establishment and the importance of relationships in change work

  • have knowledge of different approaches to reflection

Skills:

  • be able to show personal care and empathy and show that one wishes the other well by, among other things, being mindfully present

  • be able to use activities to promote learning, inclusion and coping

  • be able to reflect on the exercises and possibilities and limitations of the system they work within

  • be able to establish safe relationships and communicate in times of opposition and conflict

  • be able to identify value and ethical challenges in environmental therapeutic work with children and young people

Core competencies:

  • be able to plan and implement varied environmental therapeutic measures over time alone and as a member of a team in accordance with ethical requirements and guidelines

Examination requirements

 

The work/practicum requirement must be passed. Further information is given in Canvas at the start of the semester. There is a requirement of a minimum 80% compulsory attendance at the practicum studies and seminar at university. Participation in mentor group also requires 80% attendance.

Teaching methods

The student must have placement practicum studies in an environmental therapeutic setting for 30 days with a supervisor from the practicum site. A seminar will be held at the university where the syllabus is discussed, reflected on and processed. There will also be a two-day seminar on communication.

Assessment methods and criteria

Practical studies are assessed as pass / fail.
