Course contents

The thesis will be to study the subject in aquatic ecology within the chosen specialization; freshwater ecology and marine ecology. The contents of the thesis must be approved by the supervisor. Relevant topics for the task being posted on the internet http://prosjekt.uia.no/groups/marint/wp/ or www.hit.no and / or can be discussed by contacting academic staff at HiT or UiA.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • have a thorough knowledge of the relevant literature and theory

  • use knowledge in new areas

  • know the relevant methods and procedures

  • present data and results orally and in writing

  • analyze and think critically about information sources

  • carry out an independent research project under limited supervision and in accordance with applicable ethical standards

  • could convey extensive independent study and master the subject area of expression

Examination requirements

60 credits approved courses must be completed to pass before the thesis submitted for assessment. In addition, the two compulsory oral presentations must be completed and approved.

Teaching methods

Master thesis performed individually or by two students working together. The guidance is mandatory. Each student will receive 40 hours of supervision to his task. The guidance will be given in Norwegian but the participation of foreign language students to teaching, language is English. Details are given at the beginning of the semester. Students are assigned a supervisor for the thesis during the first semester. An overview of the current thesis topics and related supervisors will be presented to students at the beginning of the semester. Students will write a master contract with the supervisor. This must be submitted by 1 February and approved by the Department. The student must submit the thesis before 15 May of the spring semester 4th semester (or 15 November if it comes in the fall semester).
In the master race includes two compulsory seminars where students will orally present their papers in a forum of academic staff and other graduate students.

Evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

After the thesis has been submitted and assessed, there will be held an oral exam related to this. The final grade for the thesis is determined by the oral examination.
Censorship and grading is subject to the UHR recommended guidelines for assessment of dissertations in MNT subjects.
