Prerequisites

Passed 150 ECTS credits in primary and lower secondary school teacher education, including 30 ECTS credits in Pedagogy and pupil knowledge, IDR136 Physical Education and the joy of movement, IDR137 Physical Education and Pupil Diversity, and IDR208 Physical Education and Activities Theory, or equivalent.

Course contents

The course deals with the subject of physical education in a knowledge sociological perspective. The subject physical education as a general-purpose subject is an important issue through the course. Body, movement and knowledge seen in the light of history, culture and context are emphasized. The course focuses on curriculum theory, discourses and legitimation of the subject. In addition, emphasis is placed on youth culture, with a special focus on new / alternative forms of movement and physical learning adapted to the individual student's wishes and needs. The mentioned topics are elucidated through case, practice, theory and research literature.

  • Sociocultural perspectives on knowledge, body and movement. Physical learning. Youth culture, alternative movement activities.

  • Discourse analysis

The subject in practice

20 hours of practice is included in the subject. The aim of the practice is to make the students acquainted with the school and to prepare school takeover in the 8th semester in collaboration with the practice teacher.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

Knowledge

  • Have in-depth knowledge of how sociocultural context affects the subject of physical education

  • Have in-depth knowledge of professional practice, professional cultures and professional and knowledge development in physical education

  • Have in-depth knowledge of perspectives on the body, movement and knowledge in physical education

Skills

  • Be able to analyze how historical and social / political conditions influence the subject of physical education at the macro and micro level

  • Be able to identify core discourses that work in and on the subject of physical education

  • Be able to judge how students interact with the environment, and how this interaction is a function of culture and history

  • Be able to critically analyze, reflect upon and discuss relevant didactic issues and democratic processes in physical education, based on public documents and current discourses

General competence

  • Be able to contribute to critical reflection on the subject's legitimacy

  • Be able to contribute to the development of others' and own professional practice

  • Have an understanding of how integrating theoretical and practical knowledge can best influence the student's physical learning and formation

Teaching methods

The teaching is given in the form of lectures, self-study, seminar and group work, and work in the field of practice, individually or in groups.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A graded 45-minute individual oral exam. The candidates draw topics from the entire curriculum.
