Prerequisites

Passed 150 ECTS credits in primary and lower secondary school teacher education, including 30 ECTS credits in Pedagogy and pupil knowledge, IDR134 Physical Education and the joy of movement, IDR135 Physical Education and Pupil Diversity, and IDR207 Physical Education and Activities Theory, or equivalent.

Course contents

The course addresses basic physical education relevant issues within educational psychology and issues that are central to pedagogical practice in the subject physical education. It is emphasized that the students will acquire a repertoire of perspectives and be able to understand how these are used and work for the individual and in institutions. Central phenomena are illuminated through case, practice, theory and research literature.

  • Different premises and needs

  • Different cultures, childhood environment and social conditions

  • Theories of development and learning (motor, physical, social, psychological, emotional, moral)

  • Dialogical skills between teacher and pupil

  • Communication, supervision, coaching and feedback

  • The physical education teacher as a leader and motivator

 

The subject in practice

20 hours of practice is included in the subject. The aim of the practice is to make the students acquainted with the school and to prepare school takeover in the 8th semester in collaboration with the practice teacher.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

Knowledge

  • Have in-depth knowledge of key motivational theories relevant to physical education

  • Have in-depth knowledge of the development of children and adolescents in a socio-ecological perspective

  • Be able to analyze social growing up conditions related to the development of children and adolescents

  • Be able to assess and analyze different premises for teachers and pupils seen in the light of physical education and movement activity

  • Have in-depth knowledge of - and be able to apply central theories and perspectives related to learning, teaching and leadership in physical education

  • Have in-depth knowledge of various aspects of the teacher role in physical education (supervisor, coach) and be able to critically reflect upon various aspects of this role

  • Have in-depth knowledge of how physical education may be used to develop good learning environments at school and in leisure time

Skills:

  • Be able to discuss targeted behavior in physical education in light of relevant theory

  • Be able to analyze and understand individual and group processes and be able to influence these processes

  • Be able to demonstrate how various pupil and environmental conditions may influence learning and development

    • Be able to systematically and critically evaluate own performance as a teacher 

General competence:

  • Be able to take the responsibility of own professional practice as a teacher and a teacher in physical education

    • Be able to apply central motivational theories to promote learning in the subject

    • Be able to contribute to pupils' academic development based on physical education

Teaching methods

The teaching is given in the form of lectures, seminars, individual work and dialogue-based teaching / supervision. Estimated student workload is 400 hours. See more information in the semester plan in Canvas.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

At the end of the course, the students will write an individual assignment (essay) as a graded 5-day home exam. The assignment must be 3500 words (+/- 10%) (1 ½ line spacing) + literature list.
