Prerequisites

Passed 150 ECTS credits in primary and lower secondary school teacher education, including 30 ECTS credits in Pedagogy and pupil knowledge, IDR134 Physical Education and the joy of movement, IDR135 Physical Education and Pupil Diversity, and IDR207 Physical Education and Activities Theory, or equivalent.

Course contents

The course deals with the subject of physical education in a knowledge sociological perspective. The subject physical education as a general-purpose subject is an important issue through the course. Body, play, movement and knowledge seen in the light of history, culture and context are emphasized. The course focuses on curriculum theory, discourses and legitimation of the subject. In addition, emphasis is placed on children's culture, with particular regard to physical play in varied physical environments and the development of basic motor skills. The mentioned topics are elucidated through case, practice, theory and research literature.

The subject in practice

20 hours of practice is included in the subject. The aim of the practice is to make the students acquainted with the school and to prepare school takeover in the 8th semester in collaboration with the practice teacher.

On successful completion of the course, the student will:

Knowledge

  • Have in-depth knowledge of how sociocultural context affects the subject physical education

  • Have in-depth knowledge of perspectives on the body, movement and knowledge in physical education

  • Have in-depth knowledge of the significance of play for children's development, learning and well - being

  • Have in-depth knowledge of professional practice, professional cultures and profession and knowledge development in physical education in primary school

 

Skills

  • Be able to analyze and discuss physical play

  • Be able to analyze and adapt different physical environments for facilitating physical learning

  • Assess and evaluate human movement and movement development

  • Be able to identify and analyze core discourses and values ​​in the field of practice

  • Be able to critically analyze, reflect upon and discuss relevant didactic issues and democratic processes in physical education, based on public documents and current discourses

  • Be able to judge how students interact with the environment, and how this interaction is a function of culture and history

  • Be able to vary and adapt the instruction in accordance with current public documents, as well as initiate learning-enhancing measures 

 

General competence

  • Be able to contribute to critical reflection on the subject's legitimacy

  • Be able to contribute to the development of others' and own professional practice

  • Have an understanding of how integrating theoretical and practical knowledge can best influence the student's physical learning and formation

Teaching methods

The teaching is given in the form of lectures, self-study, seminar and group work, and work in the field of practice, individually or in groups. Estimated student workload is 400 hours. See more information in Canvas.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A graded 45-minute individual oral exam. The candidates draw topics from the entire curriculum.
