Recommended prerequisites

- BYG 224 Road Design, BYG221 Geotechnical Engineering I or similar.

Course contents

The course shall give competences in:

• Pavement materials

• Soil stabilization methods

• Methods for the structural design of pavements according to the Norwegian standard (mainly Håndbok N200)

• Frost in pavement structures, mechanisms and remedies

• Drainage and compaction methods, and quality control

• Training in the use of the software "Novapoint veg" through lectures and practical exercises

Learning outcomes

After taking this course, the student should have knowledge of

• technical, environmental and economic consequences of road construction

• analyze simpler issues related to ground conditions and foundation

• design highway pavements in accordance with current regulations

• use computer tools to design highways and produce standard 2D drawings like plan and profile and 3D terrain models.

Examination requirements

• Exercises must be approved in order to take the exam.

Teaching methods

• Lecture and exercises. Guest lectures, excursions and project work in groups

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Assessment methods and criteria

Written, individual examination, 3 hours, counts 70% of the total grade.

 

Project assignment counts 30% of total grade. Individual grade requirements for project work are given at the start of the semester.
