Course contents

  • Dimensioning of wood elements for different loads and load combinations (pressure, tension, shear, and torque) in accordance with European regulations (Eurocode 5)

  • Calculation, dimensioning of nodes in wood in accordance with European regulations (Eurocode 5)

  • Introduction to wood and wood-based products

  • Wood as construction material

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should:

  • Understand non-isotropic materials

  • Be able to explain and convey the advantages and disadvantages of using wood as material for given constructions

  • Be able to design relevant wooden structural parts

  • Be able to design different nodes in wood

  • Be able to verify that requirements for strength and stiffness are met in accordance with European regulations (Eurocode 5)

  • Have a good understanding of building structures

  • Have a good understanding of wood as a building material

  • Have the knowledge to evaluate when wood is a better choice as building material than other building materials

  • Have knowledge of typical wood support systems

Examination requirements

Students must pass the compulsory assignments to take the examination.

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.”

Individual 4 hours written exam. Graded assessment.
