Course contents

Key topics in the course are:

  • care, the concept of health and care for one's own health

  • anatomy and physiology

  • first aid

  • basic needs

  • preventive and health-promoting environmental work

  • observation and documentation of physical, mental, social and spiritual conditions

  • care of the sick and /or those in need of help

  • gerontology and geriatrics

  • pathology

  • drug calculation and drug handling

  • pharmacology

  • microbiology and hygienic principles

  • welfare technology

Learning outcomes

The students:

Knowledge

  • demonstrates broad knowledge of the connections between health, disability and illness

  • demonstrates broad knowledge of public health work, disease prevention and health promotion

  • demonstrates broad knowledge of causes and conditions that affect somatics

  • demonstrates knowledge of human physiology, anatomy, basic needs and development in a life course perspective

  • demonstrates knowledge of symptoms and treatment of the most common somatic and mental illnesses

  • demonstrates knowledge of general pharmacology and the effects and side effects of drugs

  • is able to update his/her knowledge of proper drug handling

  • is familiar with current patient processes

  • demonstrates knowledge of coordinated, coherent and knowledge-based habilitation and rehabilitation

Skills

  • is able to apply professional knowledge to contribute to good public health through health promotion and disease prevention

  • is able to apply professional knowledge to identify symptoms of illness and implement necessary treatment measures as well as, if necessary, obtain assistance from other health personnel or refer further to ensure proper assistance to people in need of health care

  • is able to apply professional knowledge and relevant results from research and development work in patient education

  • is able to apply professional knowledge of life-saving first aid

  • masters relevant forms of expression for documenting and disseminating professional knowledge adapted to purpose and target group

General competence

  • demonstrates insight into relevant professional and ethical issues and can identify, reflect on and handle these in the performance of services through professional judgment

  • is able to plan and carry out daily care, basic care procedures and medication management in accordance with current regulations in a caring and professionally sound manner

  • is able to plan, implement, document and evaluate sound health care based on respect for the individual's dignity and needs

  • demonstrates insight into quality work, is able to assess the risk of undesirable incidents and is familiar with methods for following this up systematically through quality, notification and non-conformance management systems

Examination requirements

  • Participated in compulsory education

  • Approved mandatory work requirements

  • Completed and approved skills training

  • Passed test in drug calculation (error-free answer)

Teaching methods

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, seminars, group work with supervision, presentations, work requirements, skills training / simulation, demonstrations, exercises and self-study. There is compulsory teaching in the subject. See further description in the subject booklet on Canvas.

Expected scope of work in the course is 540 hours

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

 

5 hours individual written school exam. Graded assessment.
