Course contents

The course is a part of the Advanced Teacher Education which consists of French didactics in two topics, pedagogy and practice.

The course is subdivided into three main areas:

  • The school's position in society and the subject's place in education

  • Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher

  • Teaching and learning

The position of education in society and the subject's place in education deals with the distinctiveness of the subject of German, its development and its legitimization as a school subject. It also examins the National Curriculum.

Pupil knowledge and the role of the teacher examines the role of the Germam teacher, and how knowledge of youth culture and the diversity of the pupils' background and abilities influence the teacher's work. Analysis and critical reflection on topics concerning German didactics.

Teaching and learning treats didactic theories, a variety of work methods and learning strategies, as well as teaching materials that are suited for the teaching of German on levels 8-10. Based on the students' proficiency in German and insight into the subject's didactics, the course will furthermore focus on didactic reflection and practical rehearsal in the form of planning, conducting, adapting and assessing German teaching on levels 8-10.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course students shall have acquired

  • Knowledge about Germam didactics aimed at levels 8-10 and the National Curriculum, level 1.

  • Knowledge of different learning strategies, work methods and learning arenas in French aimed at levels 8-1-0

  • Knowledge about youth culture and the pupils' cultural expression and their conscience and interest for the subject

  • Be able to legitimate German as a school subject and as an important subject for formation

Skills

Upon completion of the course students shall

  • Be able to apply language proficiency in German in a way that promotes good scholarly and social learning processes

  • Be able to plan, implement, adjust, document and evaluate the teaching of German on levels 8-10

  • Be able to analyze the National Curriculum for Foreign Languages and elaborate clear and relevant learning aims

  • Be able to use and give reasons for the use of various work methods and learning strategies aimed at levels 8-10

  • Be able to evaluate and use different teaching materials aimed at levels 8-10

  • Be able to evaluate and document the pupils' competence

  • Be able to give feedback that promotes learning and contributes to the pupils' ability to reflect on their own learning

General competence

Upon completion of the course students shall

  • Be able to discuss and convey didactic problems and issues related to German

  • Have acquired a professional attitude and adhere to and endorse the ethical platform of the profession

  • Be able to develop his/her didactic and academic competence and

  • Have acquired competence to utilise results from academic, didactic and pedagogical research.

Examination requirements

Approved mandatory attencance (80%)
An interdisciplinary assignment in pedagogy and German must be passed.
Completed and passed practice.

Teaching methods

Teaching will consist of a variety of work forms and will take the form of lectures, seminars, practice teaching and supervision, conversation, reflection, presentations, preparation of teaching and other practical exercises. Practical testing of various forms of activities relating to German and the role of the teacher will be central. The language will be German to the largest possible extent. Besides teaching students are expected to do work both individually and in groups. As the course is part of the advanced education level 8-13, it requires students¿ actual participation in practical assignments that are part of the teaching. Mandatory attendance will then be required.
Students will write an interdisciplinary assignment in pedagogy and German didactics.
The student will choose language (German or Norwegian) in agreement with the teacher.
The students will have six weeks of praxis.
Estimated workload of the course is about 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

30-minute oral examiniation consisting of a prepared presentation. Pass/fail.
