Recommended prerequisites

The teaching starts on a level which presupposes that the student has acquired the subjects taught in TY-120 German language 1. Students who have not attended this course must have acquired corresponding knowledge in other ways.

Course contents

Part 1) Grammar (7,5 credits): Analysis of complex sentences, case, tense, mode, genus verbi (active/passive), prepositions etc.

Part 2) Practical German free text production and translation from Norwegian to German (7,5 credits): The subject matter of practical German concerns mainly the social conditions and history of the German speaking countries.

Learning outcomes

Part 1) Grammar: By the end of the course the students shall have acquired more in-depth knowledge of the different disciplines in German syntax that what is presented in TY-125. They shall be able to analyse more complex sentence structures and be able to apply German syntactical terminology.

Part 2) Practical German (free text production and translation from Norwegian to German): By the end of the course the students shall have improved their practical skills in written German. They shall be able to write their own texts on the social conditions in the German speaking countries. They shall have a good command of different forms of expression in written German and be able to translate shorter texts from Norwegian to German.

Examination requirements

Three obligatory assignments, one in part 1) and two in part 2), must be assessed as a Pass.

For students in the master's programme for secondary education teachers, the following examination requirements apply:

The supervised professional training is performed.

The assignments (see above) are not obligatory for students in the master's programme for secondary education teachers, but the students who wish, can hand in the assignments and receive feedback, like the other students attending the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, individual language instruction and assignments. The language of instruction is German.

Regular attendance to the teaching is recommended. The students are invited to hand in and receive comments on written assignments throughout the semester.

For students attending the master's programme for secondary education teachers, supervised professional training is included (altogether two weeks per semester).
Estimated workload: Approximately 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

A 6-hour written examination. No examination support material is allowed. Graded assessment. Part 1) (50%) and part 2) (50%).
