Course contents

Various aspects of the Norwegian society both historically and present-day are presented and discussed. The main elements in the course are Norwegian history, important elements of education in Norway and Norwegian literature and language. Other important aspects of the Norwegian society which are dealt with are: Music, art, open air activity and topics in social science. The comparative element is important and widespread in the course.

Both excursions and the school experience weeks are intended to be important and integrated parts of the course.

 

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students are expected to be able to:

-give an overview of Norwegian society and culture in a historical and present-day perspective

-describe differences and similarities between society and culture in Norway and their home countries

-have in-depth knowledge about the Norwegian school system

-communicate colloquially in Norwegian (optional)

 

Examination requirements

 • 2 school experience weeks – or an alternative written project.

• Excursions

• One project related to school experience

• Two Projects related to various aspects of the course

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Admission Requirement if given as Single Standing Module

For students who are training to become teachers and students who are studying education in courses that do not in themselves lead to qualified teacher status.

Assessment methods and criteria

• An individual written essay (50% of final grade)

• An individual oral examination (50% of final grade)

Other information

Before participating in school practice or school visits all students must sign a declaration of confidentiality, and present a Certificate of good conduct issued by the police, or a confirmation from the home institution that the valid certificate is in their possession.

Three excursions are included in the programme: One lasting three days, one lasting two days, and one is a day trip. The excursions are subsidised, but students must be prepared to pay for food. Further information will be given when the semester starts.
