Course contents

The course shall familiarize the students with the processes related to starting a new business. The course shall function as an arena for practice in the start-up phase, it shall challenge and inspire the students to new thinking and innovation. At the same time it shall provide relevant knowledge about central topics like sustainable tourism, communication, business models, product- and concept development, understanding of the market, marketing, sales, organization, culture building, budgets and finance. Throughout the course the students work in groups, developing their own projects - from the idea to markets. Some groups contribute to launching and developing external concepts, initiated by entrepreneurs, public or private organizations.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the students shall

  • Be able to develop business models and plans for new projects and ventures

  • developing adventure travel concepts on a sustainable level according to; #1 preservation of nature and culture, #2 social values, #3 economy

  • Have knowledge about what it takes to start your own new venture

  • Be able to present and apply relevant models and theories

  • Be able to explain terms like business idea, business model, business plan and marketing plan

  • Have basic knowledge about different forms of business organization, IPR and financial aspects of starting a new venture

Examination requirements

Participation in full day course sessions (minimum 75% required) and in groupwork assignment.

Passed compulsory group assignment and panel presentation.

Individual reflection note (1-2 pages) on the process, innovation and implementation of the groupassignment.

Teaching methods

12 full day course sessions with academic content, group work, presentations and work with own project.

The workload is estimated to ca. 200 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

3-hour written (individual) examination (60%)

Presentation of the groupassignment in front of a panel of experts (40%)

Letter grades.
