Course contents

Focus will be determined by the categories of patients on the actual ward. Further information can be found in the course booklet that is made available to students via the Canvas learning management system.

  • Independent performance of academically defensible theatre nursing to appropriate patient groups

  • Clinical observations and judgement

  • The acutely and/or critically ill patient and their relatives

  • Documentation

  • Medical Technical Equipment

  • Ethical situations

  • Organisation and coordination of nursing in appropriate wards

Learning outcomes

The student:

Knowledge

  • demonstrates in-depth knowledge of, be able to reflect on and communicate the operations nurse's duties, role, function and responsibilities regardless of the type of ward and patient group

  • demonstrates knowledge of and can convey his/ own level of competence and do not go beyond this and can reflect on their own professional practice regardless of the type of department and patient group

  • demonstrates advanced knowledge of all major topics and can apply the knowledge in new areas of the professional practice

Skills

  • is able to analyze, justify and apply knowledge to identify the patient's need for individual and comprehensive surgical care in complex situations

  • is able to apply and disseminate knowledge in relation to observation, assessment, planning, measures and evaluation to the acutely critically ill patient and perform comprehensive surgical nursing independently in complex situations

  • is able to carry out the reception of and be responsible for the reception of elective and acute surgical patients independently, master the AHLR

  • is able to use documentation tools and report the nursing performed orally and in writing in a sound and independent manner

  • is able to use advanced technical equipment used in the relevant department independently, in a safe and sound manner

  • is able to carry out infection prevention and apply hygiene principles independently

  • is able to analyze and convey reflections on ethical dilemmas in meeting the patient group with various specialists in the field

General competence

  • is able to contribute to and participate in academic discussions in the department by disseminating and communicating expertly responsible surgical nursing, both analyzes and conclusions with various specialists in the field

  • is able to apply his/her knowledge and skills as an operating nurse, practice and develop knowledge, skills and general competence in collaboration with staff, patients and relatives

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The clinical studies are assessed as Pass/Fail. For the clinical studies to be assessed as Pass, the student must fulfill the attendance requirement (90%).

The student must have the following requirements approved:

  • Submitted two reflection notes

  • Participated in two reflection groups

  • Participated in practice theory days

The clinical studies are assessed at mid-term and final assessment periods. Please refer to the separate assessment form.
