• Practicing paediatric nursing to appropriate patient groups in cooperation with the supervisor with increasingly independent responsibility

Learning outcomes

Students will:

Knowledge

• demonstrate thorough knowledge about and be able to reflect upon the paediatric nurse's tasks, role, function and responsibility in a new or the current ward - particularly in terms of family-centred care

• demonstrate knowledge about and be able to rationally use the most common technical equipment that is used on the ward

• demonstrate knowledge about different types of documentation, curve recognition, administration of medication and report nursing activities independently

Skills

•  

  • be able to perform, plan, and administrate their own work for several patients simultaneously

  • be able to perform several subtasks independently and take responsibility for observing respiration and circulation, assess, initiate, and evaluate measures with stable and unstable patients

 

• be able to analyse and relate critically to their own level of competence and not exceed this, and be able to reflect upon their own professional performance in a new or current ward

• be able to administer appropriate medications, and independently communicate knowledge about effects, side effects and dosage of the most common medications used on the ward

  • be able to receive stable and unstable patients independently, and receive them in cooperation with a placement supervisor

General competence

• be able to analyse and relate critically to contamination prevention and apply principles of hygiene

• be able to communicate and initiate the reflection upon ethical dilemmas when meeting the patient group with the supervisor

• be able to participate in academic discussions on the ward

• be able to apply and impart knowledge concerning the observation, assessment, planning, measures and evaluation of the acutely, critically ill patient and carry out comprehensive paediatric nursing partly independently, but still in interaction with the placement supervisor

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

The clinical studies are assessed as Pass/Fail. For the clinical studies to be assessed as Pass, the student must fulfill the attendance requirement (90%).

The student must have the following requirements approved:

• Submitted two reflection notes

• Participated in two reflection groups

• Participated in practical theory days

The clinical studies are assessed at mid-term and final assessment periods. Please refer to the separate assessment form.
