Course contents

The course is part of practical pedagogical education, consisting of subject didactics in one or two subjects, teaching and practice.

The subject in subject didactics in social science is divided into three main areas:

¿ The school in society and the subject in school

¿ Student knowledge and the teacher role

¿ Teaching and learning

The school in society and the subject of the school deals with the specialization, development and legitimacy of social science as a school subject in upper secondary education, curriculum and other management documents. Analysis and critical reflection of professional didactic and professional ethical issues are central. The teaching is research-based and the main subject will be based on the foremost in classical and recent subject didactic research.

Student knowledge and learning role is about the role of social science teacher in high school, multicultural school, youth culture and diversity in the pupils background and prerequisites. Practical pedagogical skills in classroom management, communication and construction of good relationships and constructive learning environment are also central.

Teaching and learning focuses on subject didactic theories, working methods and learning strategies, as well as various printed and digital teaching materials that are suitable at different levels and in different education programs in upper secondary education. The main subject also deals with the basic skills and interdisciplinary work, as well as the vocational training of the joint subject community studies. Based on the student's professional competence and insight into the subject's didactics, the subject will further focus on academic didactic reflection and practical exercises in the form of planning, implementation, adaptation and assessment of social science education in upper secondary school.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After completing the course the student should:

¿ have in-depth academic didactics in social studies aimed at steps 11-13

¿ have in-depth knowledge of the curricula for the various social sciences in upper secondary school, as well as knowledge of current legislation and plans for professional practice in general at upper secondary school

¿ have in-depth knowledge of different models and theories for class management, relationship building and learning environment

¿ have in-depth knowledge of learning strategies, working methods and learning arenas that are suitable for social studies at different levels and education programs in high school

¿ have knowledge of vocational training in joint science subjects

¿ have knowledge of the role of social science in the multicultural society, as well as the opportunities and challenges a multicultural school entails for social education

Skills

After completing the course the student should:

¿ be able to plan, implement, adapt, document and evaluate teaching in social studies on different education programs in upper secondary education based on research-based knowledge in subjects and subject didactics

¿ Based on the curriculum, describe and convey characteristics of competence, provide learning-based feedback, as well as assess and document students' competence and help students reflect on their own learning and professional development

¿ be able to use and justify technological aids, varied work methods and learning strategies adapted to level and education programs

¿ appear as a safe and clear professional, supervisor and class reader, and be able to facilitate engagement, student participation and discussion

General competence

After completing the course the student should:

¿ hold a professional attitude and critically reflect on and communicate professional, professional and educational policy issues

¿ be able to discuss and legitimize social studies as school subjects and as important subjects in relation to overall education objectives such as abstract and critical thinking, democracy and citizenship, sustainable development and food

¿ be able to further develop their own skills by utilizing results from academic, didactic and pedagogical research, as well as initiate academic methodological development work in cooperation with partners both inside and outside school

- For students who have chosen the subject as subject 1: Passed interdisciplinary R & D work in pedagogy and subject didactics. Reference is made to the detailed description of R & D work in its own instructions

- For students who have chosen the subject as subject 2: Passed practice-related assignment

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by varied forms of work, given in the form of lectures, practice and guidance, excursions, conversation, reflection, role-playing, interviewing, presentations, preparation of teaching plans and other practical exercises. Practical testing of different forms of work related to social science and the teaching role will be central.

Besides teaching, students are expected to work on assignments, individually and in groups. A significant part of the students' learning and maturation will take place through such self-effort.

As the subject is part of practical pedagogical education, it requires the student's actual participation in practical exercises that are part of the teaching. There will therefore be a requirement for compulsory participation in the teaching.

Students who have chosen social science as subject 1 shall, in pairs or smaller groups, carry out interdisciplinary R & D work in connection with practice. Presentation of R & D work is described in more detail in your own instructions.

Students who have chosen social knowledge as subject 2 must submit a written practice-related assignment.

Students will have six weeks of upper secondary school practice.

The expected workload in the subject is approx. 200 hours.

Evaluation

Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.1.1., unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.

Assessment methods and criteria

4 hours written exam with graded assessment.
