Course contents

To give students an understanding of how empirical research are carried out by the use of examples. The examples should be generalized so that the analysis could be applicable tostudents research thesis. Examples are:

  • youth culture

  • working life

  • distribution and poverty

  • time usage

  • social fields

  • power and social relations

  • risk society

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student:

  • has specialized knowledge of sociological forms of analysis

  • understands how forms of analysis connect abstract theory with empirical observation

  • is able to assess the benefits and limitations of each of the approaches

  • is able to apply forms of analysis on various issues

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and group work. Expected work load is 270 hours .

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
