Course contents

The course starts with an introductory overview perspective and then analyzes case studies at three levels:

  • A practical-analytical perspective connects to various institutional and organizational aspects of current social communication.

  • A rhetorical perspective focuses on classical and modern communication theory related to power and influence strategies.

  • A discourse analytical perspective focuses on information campaigns and different forms of active influence strategies in different media situations and in different media.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the students should:

  • have knowledge about various aspects of media development and social communication

  • have insight into theories of power and influence

  • have insight into basic communication within the humanities and the social sciences

  • have insight into societal impacts of an expanding communications / public relations industry

  • have insight into some specific cases of central relevance to the subject area

  • be able to contribute to the development of communication strategies and project management

Examination requirements

Approved compulsory assignments (passed/failed).

Teaching methods

A combination of lectures, group discussions, excursions and guest lectures with invited guests to talk about issues within media relations and information.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Portfolio assessment constitutes 60 % of the final grade. More information about the content of the portfolio will be given in Canvas.

A 3-day individual home examination constitutes 40 % of final grade.

Graded A-F in both examinations.
