Course contents

The course gives a problem based persective of the relationship between communication and social change, and terms like the network society, the information society and the communication society will be discussed. The central perspecitve will be assessment of how new medias and different relationships between geographical places creates changed premises for human activity. Important perspectives in the course are:

  • how new communication practices affects human welfare, cultural expressions and economic activities

  • how changes in technology and media creates new conditions for communication and activity

  • how new methods of production and economic acitivity are linked with communicative change

  • how changes in mobility creates new forms of organising space

  • how communication is rooted in local practices

 

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course students should

  • have knowledge about the central perspectives of globalisation and how globalisation is connected to communication and mobility

  • be able to analyse how increased communication and mobility across places, regions and nations can create different conditions for human activity

  • be able to assess how social change may lead to new premises for communicative practices

Compulsory participation in group work

Teaching methods

 A combination of lectures, seminars and group work. Estimated workload of 27 hours per ECTS.

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
