Students should have basic knowledge of sociological theory corresponding to SV-133 Introduction to Sociology

Course contents

The course will provide the student¿s with knowledge about recent sociological theory, and how to apply the theories on issues such as human action, collaboration and communication, and distributional aspects of modern societies. Of particular interest are theories about

  • relationships between human actors and institutional structures

  • social inequalities

  • modern societies

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student should to be able to

  • explain the meaning of sociological concepts and how they form theoretical models

  • describe the most important lines of recent sociological theory

  • clarify links between classical and recent sociological theory

  • apply recent sociological theory on traditional sociological issues

Examination requirements

Approved written group assignment. Further information about the work requirement will be provided in Canvas.

Teaching methods

Teaching methods will include lectures, group work, and a written assignment to be supervised by the teacher. Expected workload is about 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.
