Course contents

The course will enable the student to provide good academic and organized education in social science. A central purpose of the social science in the school is to contribute to the students' understanding of and support for fundamental human rights, democratic values ¿¿and gender equality, and to active citizenship and democratic participation. The course provides an introduction to key topics in the field of social knowledge such as socialization, society, culture, human rights, central societal institutions, power relations, democracy and participation.

Through different approaches to teaching and didactic reflection, students will develop a conscious and reflective relationship with their teacher role. Social science is a central education subject, and the subject will focus on developing a broad understanding of the relationship between people, society and nature - also seen in historical and global perspective. The course will seek to build knowledge that enables students to plan and undertake education that challenges students and promotes their community awareness, dedication and interest in the subject.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge
After completing the course the student should have:

  • knowledge about socialization and identity development in childhood

  • knowledge of family and close communities, about different cultures and about multicultural society

  • knowledge of human rights in general and about children's rights in particular

  • knowledge of local, regional and national social institutions

  • knowledge of democracy and power relations in society

  • knowledge of key sociological ways of thinking and methods

  • knowledge of social science as a school subject and recent social science didactics.

 

Skills
After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to plan, guide and evaluate students' learning work and provide learning-oriented feedback

  • be able to work independently with academic questions and analyze professional issues based on the facts and theories of the subject area

  • be able to work with basic skills in social studies

  • be able to critically evaluate textbooks and other teaching materials for use in the education

  • be able to facilitate education on social conditions in a multicultural and global perspective, with emphasis on human rights and democratic principles.

 

General competence
After completing the course, the student will:

  • be able to communicate and collaborate with children, guardians and colleagues with different social and cultural backgrounds

  • be able to reflect critically on their own practices and update themselves professionally

  • have professional ethics

  • have insight into children's understanding of themselves and society, and of their role in society.

Examination requirements

Three passed work requirements. One of the work requirements in the course must be related to practice.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

6 hour written indivudual school exam
