Course contents

The purpose of the course is to give students an introduction to key institutions in society such as family, class, religion, work, education, democracy and globalization. The course will examine various aspects of institutionalization processes and discuss how social institutions can be understood and how they change. Furthermore the course will follow up key issues related to inclusion, exclusion and deviations.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student

  • has basic knowledge of society's most important institutions

  • has knowledge about key concepts and perspectives in the analysis of institutions

  • is able to use sociological concepts and show insight into institutionalization as a process

Teaching methods

Lectures, group tuition and individual study. In addition to general preparation for lectures, group work and the like, students are expected to make an active effort in connection with the work requirement .

Expected work load is approximately 270 hours

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

5 hour individual school exam. Graded assessment.
