Course contents

The course covers human history to present times, focusing on historical conflicts, developments and social changes at national and international level.

Thematically the course provides, amongst others, an introduction to the French and Russian Revolution, the American Civil War as well as an introduction to key eras and events from Norwegian history.

Learning outcomes

KNOWLEDGE

 

After completing the course the student should:

 

  • Have knowledge of the historical main features of social development in Norway, Lappland and the world from antiquity to the present

  • Have knowledge about current events and conditions, considered in the light of the power relations and human actions in near and distant past

  • Have knowledge of youths' understanding of history and their use of history

  • Be familiar with teaching practices and challenges when teaching students/pupils in 5th-10th grade

  • Have knowledge about different societies, cultures and historical conditions

  • Be familiar with central theories and methods taught in the course

  • Be familiar with the key sources taught in the course and also be able to critical assessment of them

SKILLS

After completing the course the student should be :

  • be able to work independently with relevant academic questions and analyze them within the theoretical foundation given in the course

  • be able to use digital tools when teaching

  • be able to critically evaluate textbooks and other learning materials

  • able to describe and analyze forms of life and living conditions in various parts of the world

  • reflect on and understand various historical processes

  • plan, implement and evaluate lessons taught in history

 

GENERAL PRACTICE

After completing the course the student should be:

  • able to reflect critically on social science issues and encourage critical thinking

  • understand current social science questions in an historical perspective

  • have gained insight into children's and young people's understanding of the discipline

  • have professional competence

Examination requirements

48 hour home exam and 4-hour written exam. Each exam counts 50% and both exams must be passed.

Teaching methods

The teaching will be characterized by lectures and seminars with elements of conversation, reflection, group exercises, presentations, excursions, etc.

 

Three weeks teaching practice with the guidance is included in the course.

 

The course has an expected work load of appr. 400 hours

Evaluation

Course evaluation is carried out as a midterm evaluation in accordance with standard procedure in the quality assurance system, chapter 2.1.1., unless other information is given in the beginning of the semester.
