Course contents

The course gives an introduction to sociological understanding and thinking, including basic sociological theory and perspectives such as contextualism, interactionism, individualism and functionalism. The course demonstrates how phenomena can be examined and explained from different perspectives.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • give an account of basic sociological perspectives and theories

  • use basic sociological concepts and terminology

  • analyse and discuss key institutions, central societal changes and social distinctions

  • Understand the complexity of various social problems related to, for example, drug abuse, mental health issues, homelessness and migration

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work, tutoring and independent study. In addition to general preparation for lectures, group work, etc., it is expected that the students play an active role with their work requirement. Practice for teacher education students. The expected workload is about 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
