Course contents

The course provides knowledge about the Norwegian health services, biomedical laboratory scientist as a profession and relevant laws, regulations and agreements. After a basic introduction to ethics, the students will obtain knowledge and reflection abilities within professional, medical and research ethics. The students will also be introduced to theory of communication with related tasks. Within research methodology, both qualitative and quantitative scientific methods will be covered.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should:

  • have knowledge about the norwegian health services and be familiar with relevant laws, regulations and agreements.

  • be able to describe the essential characteristics of a profession and have knowledge about the role of the biomedical laboratory scientist in the health services.

  • be able to account for central ethical theories and concepts.

  • be able to identify methods and premisses that are important for the analysis and assessment of important ethical questions.

  • be able to reflect on guidelines for professional ethics for biomedical laboratory scientists

  • have some knowledge of medical ethics.

  • have knowledge about communication theory and use it to communicate with different user groups.

  • be familiar with scientific methods, with an emphasis on different methods for collecting and using data, work methods and writing techniques.

  • be able to account for key requirements for research ethics.

Examination requirements

Attendance to hospital practice must be approved and the communication task must be passed. More information will be given in Canvas.

Teaching methods

Instruction is comprised of lectures, group work/discussions, seminars and a two-days hospital practice. The expected workload is about 270 hours (including instruction and self-studies) according to “Forskrift om studier og eksamen ved UiA (§13). Attendance to hospital practice and a communication task is mandatory. More details will be given in the beginning of the semester and in Canvas.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual written semester assignment counts 25 percent, graded assessment.

A 4-hour individual written exam counts 75 percent, graded assessment.
