Course contents

The topic will include:

• What is political science?

• The philosophical and historical basis of state science

• Theoretical approaches - why and how?

• Political science as empirical science - research methods

• The Norwegian political system

• National, international and supranational institutions

• International relations

• Comparative policy - different countries' political systems

Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should:

• have knowledge of the subject of political science and get a basic overview of central parts of the subject field

• have developed analytical skills, source competence and ability for critical reflection

• have basic knowledge of academic writing and reading

• be able to present and comment on subject matter

Teaching methods

The teaching is given in the form of joint lectures, seminars and compulsory activities. Expected work volume is approximately 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1.

Assessment methods and criteria

1 week individual home exam. Graded A-F.
