Course contents

This course provides an introduction to central topics within political theory and aims at develop an understanding of our political system and the relationship between state and citizen.Central concepts within political theory will be discussed; state, the concept of power, authority and legitimacy. Moreover, the course examines democracy theory - its basis, the rules of democracy, conditions and formation - as well as variations in democratic political systems. Finally, the course takes up history of political thinking.

Learning outcomes

On successfull completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Discuss and analyse main contributions to political theory

  • Give an account of various functions the state may have

  • Give an account of what a state is and how it can be organised

  • Discuss and analyse the relationship between the state, civil society and citizens.

  • Discuss and analyse the factors which gives the state legitimacy.

Examination requirements

Group assignment (approved / not approved). The assignment can also be delivered as individual written assignment.

Lectures and seminars/group work.Scope of work 270 hours.
