Course contents

Course content is related to the students' work on the bachelor thesis. The purpose of the course is to give the students opportunity to immerse themselves in a topic chosen and build experince in working independently on academic matters, and training in how to write a paper that will satisfy the requirements of scientific argumentation and presentation.

Thesis topic should be linked to the core areas of study wich is social work related to vulnerable groups. This will form the basis for the selection of themes and preparation of a research topic. Students should obtain data and be able to apply relevant theoretical frameworks as a basis for analysis and reporting in the form of a bachelor thesis.

Instruction will include introduction to various scientific and theoretical perspectives and different research methods and traditions.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students will:

 

  • be able to formulate a problem and analyze it

  • provide an overview based on research of what we already know about the topic of thesis

  • be able to collect, analyze and present data in a structured and professional manner

  • have an awareness of ethical issues related to research

  • evaluate and refer to sources in an accurate and critical manner

  • use theories and methods within the subject field

  • have a comprehensive knowledge of the chosen major subject

Teaching methods

The main mode of study is the student's independent work with the thesis as well as a few lectures and seminars. The students are expected to be active participants in the seminars and lectures. They will receive tutoring on their thesis either individually or in groups.

Parts of the lectures and seminars are compulsory, further information will be made available in the schedule plan in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
