  • Bachelor's Programme in Social Work

Recommended prerequisites

Work placement builds upon the knowledge acquired during the first two years of the Social Work Bachelor programme. For this reason it is connected to all main subject areas in the programme.

Previous knowledge must be documented by having passed all examinations in the two previous years.

Course contents

The students participation in a relevant work placement should provide knowledge about, insight into and practical training in applied social work.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student will have

• Knowledge and understanding of how a social welfare system functions in practice and how social work is conducted in this system

• Acquired practical experience in working in partnership with users and other professionals

• Increased understanding of the mutual relationship among research, theory and practice

• Increased awareness of one’s own values and attitudes, as well as competence building in communication and collaboration skills.

Teaching methods

During work placement students must comply with the work place’s rules and regulations. Students are entitled to one day of study per week during the work placement. Each student is entitled to at least two hours of tuition per week from a councellor at the place of work. A work placement period lasts for 18 weeks during the autumn semester. Work placement may involve a temporary relocation, since the student is not guaranteed a work placement near his/her home. Preparing for the work placement starts in the spring semester prior to the placement period.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
