Course contents

Based on child welfare contexts the attention will be on social work with children and families both across historical and cross-cultural perspectives. Key topics include child welfare theories, interaction models, different family types, social network, procedures in child welfare cases, and various forms of assistance measures will be included.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course the student will have:

  • General knowledge of social work with children and families, primarily related to child welfare contexts.

  • Knowledge of different theoretical perspectives within the field of child welfare /child protection.

  • Knowledge of and skills in communication with children and parents in socially difficult situations.

  • Knowledge of cross-disciplinary collaboration.

  • Knowledge of the procedures within local government child protection services.

  • Skills in critical reflection especially connected with awareness of one´s own values and attitudes, together with exercising power and authority.

Examination requirements

Participation in compulsory sessions and training. Students must pass/successfully complete the compulsory assignment(s) in order to take the examination. Coursework requirements will be listed in Canvas at the start of the course.

Teaching methods

Lectures, seminars and group work. Teacher-assisted training in communication skills /practical skills and group exercises. Compulsory practice studies, part of the instruction has mandatory attendance. Please refer to the course schedule. Expected workload is about 400 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Individual eight-day home exam comprises 100% of final grade. Graded assessment.
