Course contents

The course will provide the students insight into different counselling theories and methods and practical communication as well as communication skills.

The following topics are included:

  • Theoretical approaches to social work based on psychodynamic, learning and systems theoretical approaches with the emphasis on a relational approach

  • Communication; theory and practice

  • Crisis and counselling

  • Interdisciplinary and intersectoral approaches

  • Counselling roles

  • The conversation generally in a counselling situation and specifically as a professionnal counsellor or helper

  • Various types of conversations and helping relationships

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should have acquired

  • Knowledge about user-related counselling in the social welfare field.

  • Knowledge about basic theoretical counselling-models, different conversation and helping relationships based on interaction-theory

  • Basic counselling skills

Teaching methods

Lectures and groupwork. Mandatory teacher-assisted training in communication and practical skills and group exercises. Compulsory practice studies. Expected workload is about 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

5 hours individual written school exam. Graded assessment.
