Course contents

The course will give the students the required knowledge of theories and methods in counselling situations and practical communication as well as communication skills, and economic counselling.

The topics include:

  • Theoretical approaches to the understanding of social work

  • Individual plan

  • Systematic social work

  • User-participation and user-perspective

  • Communication; theory and practice

  • Practical studies

  • Different types of conversations and counselling-relationships

  • Economic counselling

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course the student should acquire:

  • knowledge of history of social work, theory and practice

  • a basic insight into the interaction between society and the individual with regards to problems and resources

  • a basis for understanding and analysing different users situation, thus being able to practise user-related counselling

  • a basic theoretical understanding and training in the working process in social work, in communication skills and in various help relations in specific user-related guidance

  • an understanding of how inequality and economic hardship can create social problems

  • insight in debt counseling and financial support

Teaching methods

Lectures and group work. Compulsory teacher-assisted training in communication skills / practical skills and group exercises. Compulsory practice studies. Expected workload is about 270 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

5 hour individual written school exam. Graded assessment
