Prerequisites

School Library Science 1 and School Library Science 2, or equivalent, and SK-200 Information Competency and Reading Development.

Course contents

The course will continue the theoretical introduction of information competance and reading development from SK-200, but is also a more practical course, where information search, source criticism, knowledge development and presentation of the learning result is the main topic. Students will write a Bachelor's thesis with emphasis on continuing reading training, reading various texts and work on reading strategies in the context of the development of information competance.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the programme, students will:

  • be familiar with recent research on pupils' information search behaviour, information competency and reading development

  • have knowledge about the relationship between information competency and reading development and the ability to see how one can work on these two learning outcomes in school

  • know what characterizes an extensive research work and existing requirements for scholarly method and presentation

  • have insight into ethical questions related to scholarly work

Skills

Upon completion of the programme, students will:

  • be able to make didactic and methodological assessment concerning the use of the library and learning resources in school

  • be able to formulate a research question and make an academic analysis of this, present the work in written format as well as assess and refer to sources

General skills

Upon completion of the programme, students will:

  • be able to discuss academic and ethical questions related to the field of school libraries

  • be able to identify possibilities for further development of the school library as a learning and education arena

Examination requirements

One mandatory assignment and participation in the mandatory assembly. More information is given at the beginning of the semester.Compulsory supervision. (For 15-credit courses: 3 supervision sessions.)

Teaching methods

The course is organized as part-time web-based instruction. The majority of teaching and tutoring takes place in the learning platform Canvas. One mandatory assembly will be held in Kristiansand. Compulsory supervision may be given individually or in groups. (For 15-credit courses: 3 supervision sessions.) The workload is estimated to about 400 hours.

Assessment methods and criteria

An individual written project assignment (Bachelor's thesis). Graded assessment.
