Course contents

The course consists of two subjects:
1. Newer literature for children and youth
2. Reading promotion and dissemination of literature

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should have strengthen their knowledge and skills in following areas:

  • analysis and evaluation of fiction texts for children and young adults

  • analysis and evaluation of non-fiction texts for children and young adults

  • application of textual theory to children's and young adults' literature

  • reading promotion

  • dissemination of literature, and pedagogical work in schools and libraries

Examination requirements

Students must have passed four compulsory assignments as stipulated by the course schedule handed out at the start of the year.

Teaching methods

The course is organized as part-time and web-based course over two semesters. It is an integrated course with instruction in both main subjects in both semesters. Most of the instruction and supervision take place on a digital platform. The students will be presented with lectures, background material, references and problems for discussion. The students will be expected to acquire knowledge of parts of the syllabus through self-study. Two optional meetings, one each semester, will be arranged in Kristiansand. Meetings consist of lectures and trips to school libraries. The workload of the course is estimated to about 800 hours.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

One final comprehensive grade will be awarded. The grade is based on the following two components:

  • individual written at-home examination about newer literature for children and youth (counts 2/3 of the total grade)

  • individual written examination (6 hours) about reading promotion and dissemination of literature (counts 1/3 of the total grade)
