Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the programme, students will:

  • have knowledge about the school library as an arena for learning and education

  • have knowledge about current research on the school library and relevant background documentation (legislation and curricula)

  • have knowledge about current literature for children and young people

  • have knowledge about current research and relevant academic questions related to children's and youth's use of media

  • have an insight into fundamental information organization

Skills

Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to:

  • use a school library in combination with various teaching forms and methods

  • use and assess different texts, teaching materials and information sources

  • manage and administer a school library

General skills

Upon completion of the programme, students will:

  • be able to see new possibilities in use of the school library as an active part of the learning environment in school

Examination requirements

  • Four compulsory assignments related to lectures

  • One compulsory supervision related to the project assignment

Teaching methods

The study programme is a part-time and runs over two semesters. Two joint sessions are arranged in Kristiansand, one is mandatory. The main portion of instruction and guidance take place through electronic communication on the Internet. Text and communication forms on the Net vary according to course content. Students will discuss the content of lectures, background material, references and problems. Students are expected to acquire an understanding of course literature through undertaking independent study.

Project: The student chooses a project assignment in consultation with his/her instructor. The assignment is encouraged to have a research and development angle, preferably at the student¿s own school. The project comprises a portion of the final assessment, see Examination.

The workload is estimated to about 800 hours. 

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Assessment methods and criteria

Only one comprehensive differentiated grade will be awarded. This grade is based on the following components (proportion given as a fraction):

  • An individual portfolio including three different written assignments within the "Library Science» component of the study: one practical assignment related to the basic introduction into library systems, one assignment within classification and one blogging assignment (1/3)

  • Written, individual school examination (6 hours) in the course «Literary and Media Studies» (1/3)

  • Project assignment in the course «School Library in the School's Educational Environment» (1/3)
