Course contents

The course focuses on the first six (of twelve) topics in sexological counselling:

SEXOLOGICAL APPROACH:

  • Trans-cultural sexology

  • Communication

  • Counselling methods

Topic one: Versatility. Bio-psycho-social knowledge and understanding of sexual problems.

  • George Engel's bio-psycho-social model

  • System-theoretical models

  • Co-operational models

  • Comprehension of the profession

Topic two: The professional meeting with the client

  • What is the definition of a professional attitude?

  • Ethics

  • Understanding interpersonal boundaries

  • When is the right time to confront clients with sexual problems?

Topic three: Counselling methodology. Cases and evaluation.

  • Counselling methods

  • Role play

  • Presentations and discussions of cases

GENERAL SEXUALITY

Topic four: Sexual dysfunctions and sexual problems

  • Women´s sexual dysfunctions

  • Men´s sexual dysfunctions

  • Sexological methods of treatment

Topic five: Sexuality in critical phases of life

  • Sexuality in childhood

  • Puberty

  • Pregnancy, birth, and the newborn period

  • Abortion and stillborn children

  • Divorce and loss of partner

  • Menopause

  • Establishing partnerships

  • Marriage

  • Economical problems

  • Unemployment

Topic six: Body experience, sensuality, eroticism and love

  • Psychomotor physiotherapy

  • Body therapy

  • Body exercise

  • Training the senses

  • Erotic culture

  • Psychology and sociology of love

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student:

Knowledge

  • have knowledge about various counselling methods, and through role play have learnt how to give counselling in various work situations

  • have knowledge about the most usual sexual dysfunctions and their treatment

  • have knowledge about variant sexuality and the need of councelling

Skills

  • have learnt that sexuality can be understood from different points of view, and know other groups of professionals who might be necessary to cooperate with.

  • will be observant regarding sexual problems in various work situations

  • will approach sexual problems by using sexual-therapeutic methods and techniques

General competence

  • have learnt to obtain adequate professional knowledge about clients´ sexual problems

  • have an understanding of how social factors may influence sexuality in both positive and negative sense

  • have learnt to respond to the different situations which people may encounter in their sexual life and have developed an understanding of the role of sexuality in different contexts

  • learnt how to use sexual therapy

Examination requirements

  • Approved participation in compulsory group tutorials.

  • Attendance requirements must be met.

Evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Assessment methods and criteria

Project work in groups with a following presentation at a seminar. Please see guidelines. The project will be assessed as pass/fail after the presentation. Please see guidelines in the course brochure.
