Relevant master's degree or the equivalent.

Recommended prerequisites

Students who lack KR-204-1 Sociology of Religion in their Bachelor Degree and REL400 Religion in their Master's Degree, are recommended to read introductory literature to theory of sociology of religion, as well as introductory material to sociological theory.

 

 

Course contents

The course will provide an overview of classical and actual theoretical directions and discussions in sociology of religion. It presents the aim, construction and implementation of theories of social studies. Furthermore central examples of social scientifical theories will be presented and discussed, as well as their relevance for the sociology of religion.

Learning outcomes

Upon competion students will

 

- be familiar with literature of sociology of religion on a high academic level

- be able to account for the history of research behind the theoretical choices in the dissertation

- make adequate use of the concepts of religious sociological theories in his/her dissertation, by this confront and combine different theories

Examination requirements

Before each session the student must compile a paper where the theme of the course is related to the student's dissertation project. The paper must be available before the session. As part of the coursework requirements each student must comment on another student's paper. This is a coursework requirement in order to hand in an essay for assessment.

Assessment methods and criteria

After completion of the course each student must hand in a paper of a maximum of 8 pages where lines are drawn between the relevant curriculum and the student's dissertation. An actual paper topic may be the discussion of the theoretical choices regarding the problems raised in the dissertation.
